Before you are invited to audition or interview for your dream job, you will likely have to submit a resume. Resumes are also used to apply for degree programs, scholarships, summer festivals, competitions, grants, and more. An effective resume quickly and efficiently shows the reader your most pertinenet qualifications, skills, and experiences that are relevant to the particular opportunity for which you are applying. There is no one set format for an effective resume, but it is important to showcase relevant content in a compelling way. Below is a list of important content to include in your resume, as well as some free resume templets with formatting examples.
1. Letterhead - Design a letterhead at the top of the page with your name and contact information, such as your phone number, email, address, and/or website. You may also want to include your instrument or voice type.
2. Experience - If you are applying for a performance position, it can be helpful to organize your experience by performance type. Categories for instrumentalists (except pianists) include Orchestral Experience, Chamber Music Experience, Solo Performances, and Soloist with Orchestras. Categories for pianists include Solo Recitals, Soloist with Orchestras, Chamber Music Performances, and Collaborative Experience. Categories for vocalists include Full Roles, Partial Roles, Choral Experience, Solo Recitals, and Music Theatre. Categories for composers include Original Compositions, Premiers, Arrangements/Transcriptions, and Commissioned Works. If you are applying for a teaching, administrative, or other non-performance position, you should list your relevant non-performance experience and skills first. Whether you are applying for a performance position or non-performance position, you should include the name of the organizations you played/worked for, year(s) of employment, and your title, such as your instrument and/or role you played.
3. Education - List all of your undergraduate and graduate degrees, the name of the institution(s) you attended, and your graduation year. You may also want to list your cumulative GPA, primary teachers, masterclasses, and additional professional training such as summer festivals. Information of this kind can be added to this section, or put in a section of its own if the quality and quantity is extensive.
4. Honors/Awards - List all of the honors/awards you have received, such as competition wins and scholarships. Include the name of the honor/award, city, state, country, date, and any necessary explanation.
Other - Depending on what you are applying for, you may want to include additional experiences or accomplishments, such as volunteeer work, publications, or relevant non-music skills.
